If you like textured knitting, like to be somewhat experimental in your knitting, and like to knit scarves, shawls, and hats, this book is for you. Yes it’s expensive, but with this book and my stash, I’ve got Christmas covered. I anticipate many happy hours of experimentation, discovering how different sequences pair with various yarn textures, colors, and weights, and ending up with beautiful, unique hand knits.Don’t let the technical look of the book put you off. Just look at the methods on p. 5, look at the pictures to pick a texture, and dive in. You will quickly understand the basic concept. The book is copiously illustrated with swatches that will be helpful and time-saving guides to experimentation. While the basic idea is simple, I am very happy to own the book and have it for reference. The book has illustrated patterns with that use a variety of yarns and also colorwork. It contains scarf, shawl, and hat patterns (see thumbnail photos of patterns at the end of the book.) It also gives very helpful basic information on working with color and variegated yarns. It covers how to use the method beyond rectangles, but I haven’t gotten there yet.One note on buying the book. I had it on order at Amazon for months, and figured it wasn’t available yet. Then I discovered the book was available, but at about twice the price of my Amazon order. Fortunately, I happened to spot the book in a high-end knitting shop I visited while traveling. After looking at it, I quickly decided it was worth the price to me, but it costs enough that I was hesitant to purchase sight unseen. My understanding is that the book is being sold through LYS and bookstores, rather than directly by Amazon. I understand the sentiment and applaud it, but it does make life difficult for those who don't live in a large city and want to see a book in person before spending $60.
This book had great potential, and obviously a lot of work went into the prose, but the illustrations were terrible. I agree with the comments about the poor quality of the sample photos. Although the cover photo is in color and beautiful, as are a (very) few of the photos inside, the very numerous remaining photos required to show the sample stitch patterns are a let down. They are a sepia brown shade and the stitch definition is almost impossible to discern. I suggest buyers take the time to inspect the book in person before ordering online. In my opinion, the author should not have allowed this to go to mass printing with photos that look like these, especially at the price she is retailing this for.
I made a couple scarves with the 1-row sequence knitting and loved them. The violet/black scarf has mistake ribbing, which I really like. Now I'm working on a shawl using a serpentine stitch pattern that is aesthetically reversible. The patterns are easy to do but look more complex than they are.
Many of the patterns can be improvised from a stitch dictionary, although the serpentine concept may be new. But really, knitting has been around for so many hundreds of years, not much is truly new. The yarn choice for the swatches was tragic. It is too fuzzy and heathered, rather than a solid color. And the swatches didn't appear to have been blocked. As a result most of the broken ribbed patterns looked identical and the other patterns looked like the same swatch of Berber carpet. Overall the book is overly complicated and repetitive, poorly presented and extremely expensive for what you get. There is one pattern I like and will make a scarf from it. The other stitch patterns I'll just have to knit up myself to see what they look like. Maybe the author will redo the swatches with plain, high stitch-definition solid yarn for a revised edition, but somehow I doubt it will happen.Addendum: I tried to make the serpentine herringbone scarf in the book and once I looked at the pattern carefully I realized that it doesn't match the photograph of the finished scarf. Very disappointed as the serpentine method will not give the desired result. I don't know what pattern the author used as I could not find it in the book. So I worked out a herringbone pattern that was not a serpentine pattern but was very easy to remember; however, it did require me to be able to "read" my knitting and follow a chart.Honestly, if you really can't see the subtlety of the pattern in "garter rib" or so many of the broken rib stitches in the book, it's really not worth the effort to throw the yarn back and forth every two or three stitches. And as I looked at this book carefully I realize how this book takes an exciting creative art and makes it sooo boring; just a series of repetitive knits and purls ad nauseum and the only way the patterns will be visible is with very plain yarn. If your brain does a hiccup and accidentally you "knit 9, purl 2 instead of knit 10, purl 2" it may be a very long time before you detect the error and it will be very annoying to fix all of the incorrect stitches once you do. Maybe the ideas area better for machine knitting than hand knitting. I am not a knitting robot. I am returning this book. Maybe I will buy it again if it ever comes out in paperback, as the price is way too high as it is.
